UNIT 169 PLAYERS CLUB 2023

December 10, 2022

Our mission is to provide challenging and fun bridge tournament experiences for Central Carolina Bridge Association members

Our focus is to successfully execute four quality bridge tournaments each year.  This entails using great venues with easy access and parking, clean facilities, providing appropriate snacks and beverages, and using qualify ACBL directors.  In order to achieve this goal, we need additional financial support.  We are asking our friends who love this game to help.  The cost of hosting a quality tournament has increase and, as we build back our attendance at our tournaments, entry fees do not completely cover our cost.  Therefore, we are seeking a yearly contribution from those who can and are willing to help Unit 169.  We will not be passing envelopes at club games asking for contributions. By securing appropriate funding up front, we can plan and budget appropriately for each tournament.  Those who chose to help will become members of the Central Carolina Bridge Association Unit 169 Player’s Club.  There will be recognition and appreciation events for those who join.

Click HERE  for a list of past Goodwill Ambassador recipients

November 16, 2022

Every two years the ACBL recognizes a person within our Unit who has made a contribution to the game.  This award will be presented to the proud recipient in Greenville, SC  at a special dinner during the regional tournament in June.

All members of Unit 169 can nominate people who have made a contribution to our local games and tournaments.  For example, you could nominate someone that has helped you or has made bridge more enjoyable over the past two years, or someone who exhibited gracious table manners and kindness to partners and opponents.  Many of our members have volunteered their time to help run games and tournaments.

Our Unit and District 7 is committed to providing  the best organization and tournaments in the country. In pursuit of that, we support the principles of goodwill, including Zero Tolerance, active ethics, full disclosure and other concepts designed to make bridge more pleasant for everyone.

Some of the components of goodwill include:

• Observes both the laws and ethics of the game

• Plays competitively and is always fair

• Is gracious in victory as well as defeat

• Is pleasant as both a partner and an opponent

• Exhibits good manners at the table and helps others enjoy the experience

• Graciously abides by rulings of the director

• Does not give unsolicited bridge lessons at the table

• Avoids discussion of boards in the presence of new opponents

• Gives due consideration to personal appearance and conduct

• Does not become quarrelsome or angry during the game

• Genuinely promotes bridge and upholds its reputation

• Gives back to the game through mentoring newer players

• Volunteers in administration of the game

• Promotes the game by example

We will accept nominations until December 1, 2022.  Please write a short note as to why you are nominating an individual. Please send all nominations to Dixie Culver, Unit Secretary at culverdix@yahoo.com.  All nominations will be posted on the website.  The Board will vote  on your nominations and submit the name to the District.  The winner will be invited to a very special dinner and recognition at the District 7 Tournament in Greenville SC in June.  Let's keep the tradition of giving back alive in our Unit.

BARBARA HELLER ELECTED TO ACBL BOARD

July 6, 2022

Members of District 7’s unit boards voted the first two weeks of June to elect Barbara Heller of Knoxville, TN, to replace Mike Kovacich of Stone Mountain, GA, as the Region 6 representative on the ACBL Board of Directors. District 7 is one of three (of 25) that stands as its own Region, because of its membership (second largest in the ACBL).

Barbara has been involved on all levels of volunteering and bridge governance since 1983, three years after she became an ACBL member. She presently serves on the ACBL Educational Foundation, of which she is a former president, and is on the league’s Advisory Council (formerly Board of Governors), where she had been 1st or 2nd alternate to the District Director for two decades

Although Barbara has spent many years and hundreds of hours working on the national level, she is best recognized for her work within the district. She is a former Gatlinburg Regional chair; was a Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference board member from 1986 until its dissolution in 2014, and has been on the District 7 board since before then. She served both boards in multiple positions, including president

At the game, (and even before! see below), you'll have the opportunity to purchase a game with some of the best players in the Unit who have generously agreed to be part of a silent auction, as well as a couple of pairs who have offered their services for a future Unit or Sectional team game.  The pairs are Rich Peffer & Marty Friedman and Debbie Monroe & Fran Tewkesbury.

Expert players include:  Peter J. Boyd-Bowman, Frank Burgess, Kathie Dwyer, Bob Hale, Josh Hoffman, David Idleman, Kent Leggett, Tom May, Cathy McLeod, Dwight Meredith, Rich Peffer, Bill Wisdom and Cindy Wright.

All future games to be arranged with team or experts at the convenience of all parties.

In addition, three of our best cooks (Dixie Culver, Brenda Garzia and Debbie Monroe) are offering their gourmet cooking skills as silent auction contributions.

And ... we have a donor who will be matching silent auction gifts, so your participation in the silent auction will reap even larger rewards for the Alzheimer's Association.

The fee for this game is $10, with 100% of game proceeds going directly to the Alzheimer's Association.  So, get yourself a partner and come to the Alzheimer's charity Unit game on June 25 at 1:00 pm at the Guilford College United Methodist Church in Greensboro.  If you are unable to attend, you can particpate in the silent auction by emailing your highest bid to Fran Tewkesbury at tewkesbury@mac.com by Friday, June 24.

If you would like to make your own gift to the  Alzheimer's Association, send your tax-deductible contribution, via check made payable to "Alzheimer's Association," to Fran Tewkesbury, 1005 Country Club Drive, Greensboro NC 27408.  Your gift counts toward our Unit's Longest Day fundraising efforts which, in the past, have landed us among the top bridge Unit contributors in the US.

If you have any questions, please contact Fran Tewkesbury at 336-202-3357 / tewkesbury@mac.com

DISTRICT 7 ON-LINE NEWS

TOURNAMENT VACCINATION POLICY

December 24

District 7 is following the ACBL policy of requiring all tournament attendees to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. “Fully vaccinated” means that it has been at least two weeks since you received the second Pfizer or Moderna shot, or since you received a single-dose vaccine. Please do not plan to attend any District 7 regional or sectional unless you can provide proof of vaccination. No exceptions will be allowed. In addition, District 7 encourages, but does not require, each eligible individual to get the booster shot when it becomes available to you.

Any tournament staffed by the ACBL requires masking of players, staff, and volunteers unless community transmission rate is below “substantial” (as determined by the CDC or a similar metric from a health agency) a week before the start date of the tournament. Whether or not masks are required, masking is always recommended. This ACBL policy does not countermand any ordinance or law in effect at the site of the tournament.
