Louisa Witten wins David Parsons Trophy for 2025

Article submitted by Judy Hellen

Each year the David Parsons Trophy is awarded to the non-life master who earned the most masterpoints during the calendar year. At the Salisbury Sectional Chris Shepard, Unit 169 VP Membership, presented the trophy to Louisa Witten of Salisbury. She earned 229.67 points during the calendar year. Congratulations, Louisa!
Pictured Louisa, left, and Chris, right.
Salisbury Sectional had a Full House

Some problems are nice to have. Such was the case at the Salisbury Sectional when the attendance for the 499er section surpassed expectations. There was a slight delay to the start of the first Friday session as tables were shuffled into the limited section. Then everything ran smoothly.
Many thanks to Dick Brisbin, tournament chair, and Louisa Witten, partnership chair, for delivering another great Salisbury Sectional. The tournament drew 130.5 tables compared to 117 last year. The hospitality and food were outstanding.
Here are the top ten masterpoint winners from Unit 169:

Bill Wisdom, Salisbury - 23.24 MPs
Dan Fowler, Salisbury - 21.01
Rhett Inabinet, Winston-Salem - 16.94
John Kimel, Advance - 13.17
Rich Peffer, Greensboro - 11.91
Peter J. Boyd-Bowman, Greensboro - 11.76
Debbie Monroe, Greensboro - 11.76
Dick Brisbin, Salisbury - 9.07
Marty Friedman, Greensboro - 8.94
Bob Hale, Greensboro - 8.83
Toni Iossi, Salisbury - 7.94
Debbie Fowler, Salisbury- 7.94

We also want to recognize 499ers who earned MPs:

Donna Hancock, Winston-Salem - 2.29 MPs
John Merschel, Winston-Salem - 2.29
Brenda Ganim, Greensboro - 2.06
Sam Niehans, Jamestown - 2.06
Beverly Brown, Greensboro - .87
Candie Hurley, Summerfield - .87

Congratulations to Bill Wisdom, the overall masterpoint winner at the Salisbury Sectional held February 20-22.
Unit 169 members who attained Life Master in 2025
Congratulations to each member who reached the rank of Life Master during 2025. Reaching this goal is not done alone. Several of you share the spotlight with your regular partners. Mary Hennie and Pat Macon are also new life masters.

Triad Bridge Club Supports Operation Yuletide

The Triad Bridge Club participated in Operation Yuletide, a project of the Greensboro Police Department, which identifies vulnerable families in our community to provide them with gifts, clothing, and essentials during the holidays. April Parker and Booboo Watkins chaired the club's effort. We adopted two families this year that are both going through tough times.
-
The Nelson Family: A resilient single mother raising three daughters (Sharonda, 10; Shadiamond, 14; and Alexis, 17). The family is currently living in a hotel, and the mother is working hard to support her girls who attend Vandalia Elementary, Jackson Middle, and Smith High.
-
The Walker Family: This family of five is facing a sudden crisis. Their 9-year-old daughter, Kennedy, was diagnosed with cancer just two weeks ago. The parents are currently out of work to be by her side at Brenner’s Children’s Hospital, while trying to maintain normalcy for her siblings, Madison (5) and Cayden (11).
April and Boo Boo collected the donations and shopped for over $1700 of gifts while Barbara Boyd-Bowman was in charge of the gift wrapping! Our club raised nearly $5,000 — far beyond any goal we set. That generosity means not only that the Walker and Nelson families will have a brighter, merrier Christmas, but the excess will also go back into the GPD’s general fund to help last-minute families in need and even seed next year’s campaign. Once again, we’ve proven that our community is as strong in spirit as it is at the table!

Congratulations to Eric Peffer,
Player of the Year 2025

Eric Peffer is the winner of the Tim Stecker Player of the Year contest for 2025. To qualify one must play in at least six unit games. Master points from the unit games are combined with those from our sectional tournaments. Eric played in 8 of the 12 unit games with various partners. At the final game of the year, he was .28 masterpoints shy of Fran Tewkesbury who was also playing. Eric with his partner, Rich Peffer, was able to pull ahead by less than one masterpoint.

Fran Tewkesbury, yet again, is the runner up. Hang in there, Fran. See the final top ten players here.

Congratulations, Eric. And Fran.

Unit 169 Team Joins Walk to End Alzheimers
Article submitted by Judy Hellen

Congratulations to Candie Hurley and Judy Hellen for organizing the "Learn Bridge - Play Bridge - Have Fun" team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's event in Guilford County on October 25. Candie pulled together a team of walkers and solicited donations. Our walkers included Candie, Jane Perrin, Peter Boyd-Bowman, Eric Lee, Marty Friedman and Kevin and Mary Haggerty. Judy assembled a sponsor booth and workers. Marty Benjamin and Dixie Culver helped man the booth. Our donations exceeded $2,000 dollars. In fact, one of our team members, Judy Hellen, brought in donations exceeding $500 to qualify for the Champions Club.

Our presence at this event is new this year. The ACBL is now a national partner and we were able to sponsor the walk with no commitment for donations. Our goals were to support the Alzheimer's Association, spread the word how bridge is beneficial in delaying the onset of dementia and introducing our clubs and lessons to the wider community. We did, in fact, hear people say they did not know about what we offer. Hopefully, we will be able to attract some newer players.

It was a learning experience for all of us since we had not participated in the Walk before. We will brush up on our talking points and our SWAG. Still, it was a fun and meaningful day.

Bidding Conventions with Rich Peffer
Jacoby 2NT and Reverse Drury
Jacoby 2NT may be your first exposure to a game-forcing auction. An opening hand opposite and opening hand is going to get to a game contract. Getting to a slam contract is not as straightforward. This convention allows you to find that slam in a controlled manner. Rich will also include other tools for slam bidding, namely bidding controls and the 1430 keycard ask. (Keycards include all the aces and the King and Queen of trumps.)

Reverse Drury solves the bidding problem that occurs when your partner opens in third or fourth seat after you have already passed. This convention shows when you have support and 10-12 points. If your partner opened light, you can still land at the 2-level. Useful handouts and example hands will be a key part of learning this convention together.
You may register for either one or both classes.
Date and Time:
Jacoby 2NT, Monday, December 8, 9:30 am - 12 noon
Reverse Drury, Monday, December 15, 9:30 am - 12 noon
Location: Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Rd, Greensboro
Cost: $30 per class payable at the first session
Online Registration: Here

To register, or for more information, contact: Rich Peffer at rpeffer325@att.net or text/call 336-402-5367.
Topics in Bidding with PJBB: NMF and FSF
New Minor Forcing (NMF) and Fourth Suit Forcing are conventions that help you accurately locate the best contract (especially game or slam) when the bidding gets complex. They occur at a far greater frequency than most any other convention. Peter J. Boyd-Bowman is ready to explain when and how to use each. These classes are intended for developing and intermediate level players.

New Minor Forcing allows a responder with invitational-plus values to specifically explore for a major-suit game fit. Similarly, Fourth Suit Forcing establishes a game force when three suits have been bid, allowing the partnership to search for the best final strain without guessing Mastering these tools ensures you reach the highest-perctage game or slam contract with the most hands.

Dates and Time: Wednesdays, November 12 and 19 , 9:30 am - 12 noon
Location: Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Rd, Greensboro
Cost: $30 per class

Bridge Class: Deadly Defense with David Idleman
Defenders are at a disadvantage during the play of the hand. The declarer can see all 26 cards they have to work with. Defenders are left to "talk" to each other with the cards they play. Once you understand the language, you will discover how much fun you can have on defense while you are improving your results.

Come to this class to learn
-
defense techniques for leads, second hand play and third hand play,
-
how to interpret the message,
-
why the technique works, and
-
how to clue partner on whether a suit is likely to generate defensive tricks.
David Idleman is the instructor for this course. Although good bridge players aren't necessarily good bridge teachers, David has a gift of being able to explain a topic in simple to understand terms. You don't want to miss this opportunity. I encourage you to enroll early.
Dates: Wednesday, August 27, September 3, 10, 17 and 24.
Time: 9:45 am - noon
Location: Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Road, Greensboro
Instructor: David Idleman
To register contact: Judy Hellen at Judy@LearnBridgeGSO.com or 336-558-3613.
Cost: $125 for all five sessions or $30 for any single session

Mentor-Mentee Game / Unit Championship Game: May 3, 2025
Article submitted by Rich Peffer

Over the past 2-3 months, newer players in our Unit have been paired with more experienced players as “Mentor-Mentee Pairs”. The Unit Game on Saturday, May 3 was a special event where all pairs were Mentor-Mentee Pairs. We had 12.5 tables that day, and the game was expertly directed by Peter Boyd-Bowman. Results of the game can be found at this link.

The top 3 scoring pairs overall came out of the E/W direction:
-
Candy Toler – Mary Lou Rix (B): 64% - 4.30 MPs
-
Susan Wesley – Bob Whaling, Jr. (A): 60% - 3.22 MPs
-
Mike Jacobs – Jeannie Leggett (A): 59% - 2.42 MPs
The first 3 pairs in the N/S direction were then in the 4, 5 and 6 position overall:
-
Rene Cone – Rich Peffer (B): 56% - 1.83 MPs
-
Mark Meyer – Laura Olsen (B): 56% - 1.37 MPs
-
Nancy Osborne – Jim Parker (A): 55% - 1.03 MPs
The Mentees each brought a dish to share, and the food was delicious. But more than the finish order and the good eating, everyone enjoyed meeting new friends who are working together to up their bridge game. A big THANK YOU to all of our Mentors!

M-M Coordinators (L to R): Chris Kendall, Mark Meyer, Martha Meyer

UNIT 169 NAMES DIXIE CULVER AND RICH PEFFER
GOODWILL AMBASSADORS FOR 2023/2024

Unit 169 has elected Dixie Culver and Rich Peffer to be our 2023/2024 Goodwill Ambassadors. Dixie and Rich will represent our Unit at the District 7 celebration in Greenville, South Carolina in June.
Dixie and Rich were nominated by members at large in our Unit and were elected by the Unit Board in December 2022. A ”Goodwill Ambassador” is one of the highest honors bestowed by our Unit 169, District 7 and the ACBL. This honor represents members who love the game of bridge and exhibit excellent manners at the table, respectful of fellow players and have contributed to the growth and enjoyment of the game. Both Dixie and Rich have shown themselves to be excellent examples of these values.
Dixie has been a member of Unit 169 for over 10 years. She has served on our Board of Directors for the last 5 years. Currently Dixie is the Secretary/Treasurer of Unit 169. She manages all of our financial accounts and is responsible for budgeting and planning our activities for the year. She has given her time freely supporting our tournaments and helping with our Unit games. If you need something done Dixie is always the first person raising her hand to help. Dixie is creative and has brought new ideas and practices into Unit 169. She is thoughtful and a great friend of the game.
Rich Peffer has been a member of Unit 169 for 12 years and has served on the Board for the last 4 years. Rich is a bridge teacher and a Director and runs several games in the area. He engaged the Unit’s members to support our very successful “Learn Bridge is a Day” Program in August 2022, which attracted over 120 new players. He applied for and received grants from the ACBL and District 7 to help fund this project. He hired Patty Tucker a renowned bridge teacher to run this event. Currently, Rich is the point person for growing our membership. He gives his time freely to mentor new players and is working very hard to find new directors and teachers for Unit 169. Rich is our Unit’s Game Director two Saturdays a month. Durning the pandemic, Rich was responsible for keeping our members safe when they attended Unit games and tournaments.
Both Dixie and Rich are great examples of people in Unit 169 who help make our bridge experience in the Triad fun. Their efforts are duly recognized by our Membership and the Board. Congratulations, Dixie and Rich for being Unit 169, 2023/2024, Goodwill Ambassadors.

DISTRICT 7 NAMES CINDY WRIGHT TO THE
AILEEN OSOFSKY NATIONAL GOODWILL COMMITTEE

Cindy was selected by the District 7 Board of Directors as an Eileen Osofsky National Goodwill Ambassador. Cindy will be recognized with a pin at a national celebration in June in Greenville, SC. Cindy had served as the Unit’s Goodwill Ambassador in 2018. It is hard to list all of Cindy’s contributions to the game of bridge. Cindy has been a member of our Unit for over 28 years, served on the board for over 10 years. Cindy currently directs several games each week in Winston Salem and has been the long-term Tournament Chair for the late summer Winston Salem Sectional. Cindy was the Tournament Chair for our first NLM Regional held in High Point in 2019. That tournament was one of the first NLM regionals and was one of the best attended in the country and a big financial success. Cindy agreed to Chair our second NLM tournament last February. Cindy has served as Unit Director in the past. Her efforts to get people out to play bridge are noteworthy. Cindy has grown our Winton Salem membership. She helped jumpstart the Unit’s offering of “Learn Bridge in a Day” program with Rich Peffer. We are so happy that the District 7 recognized what Unit 169 has know for a long time. Cindy is the glowing example of a Goodwill Ambassador. Cindy congratulations!

Our financial situation is solid in spite of a nearly $5K loss on our October NLM tournament. Membership hovers around 750. Our Education Liaison, Judy Hellen, has brought in more teachers. Our website continues to be a source of communication.
Oh, yes. There was a game.
There were 17 tables in the open section and 4 more tables in the NLM section. Let me repeat: We had an NLM section! A shout out is due to Dian Carr who pushed for a place for newer players.

We had players from across the unit. It really is fun to see friends from outside our local club. Won't you join us at our next unit game on January 4th in Greensboro?

Tuesday Bridge Club
Triad Bridge Club is offering local bridge players a chance to play this great game, but in a more relaxed, less competitive environment. The Tuesday Bridge Club will be held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesdays of every month at 1:30 pm at our club home, Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Rd, Greensboro.

The Tuesday Bridge Club will NOT be a duplicate format. Instead, it will just be "friends playing cards," having fun, talking and learning about this wonderful game. Our initial games will be shuffle-and-deal, no prepared boards, but that may change later. This should be a REALLY open and fun experience for players of all skill levels.

Peter Boyd-Bowman, Barbara Pomer, Judy Hellen, and Andy Symmes will be your hosts. The cost is free. However, there are still costs involved for the club (rent, coffee, cards, etc.) so a suggested donation of $5 is appreciated.

For more information, contact Barbara Pomer at bdpomer@gmail.com at 336-202-1299 or Peter Boyd-Bowman at
