Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our players, only fully vaccinated players can attend these first Unit games.  A large percentage of people are now vaccinated, but COVID is still a serious health concern for those who have not yet been vaccinated.  Therefore, since we are using public facilities, all players must be vaccinated for now.

  • A Few Days before the Unit Games - Take a photo of your vaccine card and email it or text it to the Director, along with you full name (mine is attached below as an example; it's easy!)  The Directors at our weekly games will be helping folks to do this as well, if you'd like.  Also, line up a favorite partner, or email the Unit Game Director to help find one.

  • Check-in - The first time you attend a Unit Game, please arrive early so the Director can greet you and get the games organized for a 1:00 pm start. If you haven't emailed/texted your card ahead of time, show your COVID vaccine card (or a photo if it) at the table in the lobby, and we'll check off your name and let you know at which table your are to sit.

  • Cost - $8 / Free for players with 0-5 MPs

  • Food - There will be no food.  Water and coffee will be available.  Folks are free to bring their own lunch for themselves.

  • Length of Game - We will play 21-24 boards.  Hand records will be provided following the game.

  • Game Time - 1:00 pm starting time

DISTRICT 7 REGIONAL IN ATLANTA, GA

August 31 - September 6, 2021 at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel

May 30, 2021

Click HERE for flyer and schedule

Vaccinations required and masks required in foyer and player areas, with exceptions for qualifying medical conditions or firmly held religious beliefs, to be determined by ACBL on case-by-case basis.  To request an exception form, email josephcsherwood@gmail.com

Hotel is at the intersection of I-75 and I-285.  Bridge rate is $124 plus tax and tourism fees.  Price good thru August 9.  Cancellation 72 hours prior to arrival date (one-night, non-refundable afterward).  FREE parking.  For reservations, call 800-468-3571 and ask for District 7 bridge rate.

BRIDGE CRUISE

For over two years, Skip Wilson and Claudia Hale have tried to organize a social bridge cruise for members of Unit 169, our family and friends.  However, with COVID-19 and the Delta variant this year, reservations have plummeted.

The cruise aboard the Harmony of the Seas is still scheduled to sail on November 14.  However, OUR DUPLICATE BRIDGE EVENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELED.  Some of you may decide to keep your reservations and sail with us in spite of the loss of our organized bridge; others may wish to CANCEL NOW BEFORE FINAL PAYMENT IS DUE (EARLY AUGUST).  We hope you understand from the following facts and future uncertainties why we made this decision

  1. As of July 26, only 17 bridge players signed up for the November 14 cruise.  By comparison, over 60 had signed up in 2020 before it was canceled due to COVID.

  2. Hoping to recruit more players, an email was sent on July 1 to 3,685 ACBL members in North Carolina Units 118, 119, 153, 169 and 191 extending an invitation to participate in our social bridge cruise.  There have been ZERO inquiries and/or reservations as a result of that email.

  3. Currently, we are looking at 3 to 5 tables of bridge with a Howell movement, and very limited masterpoints awarded.

  4. The 80% masterpoints award is predicated on having about 10 tables and, more importantly, playing at least 24 boards.   We believe the ACBL will still let us pay 80%, but they do not have to with such a small group.

  5. We probably do not have enough people to play bridge twice a day unless everyone shows up.  If only 10 of the 20 people show up for bridge, we cannot hold a game.  The designated conference room is in jeopardy for our use with so few players.

  6. Signing up another dozen players will cure a lot of ills, but will still be a very small group for a bridge cruise.  Trying to hold a bridge cruise without an adequate number of players will be a disaster.

  7. COVID cases are increasing, and there is the potential for mask mandates and quarantines.

If you have questions regarding your reservation thru CruisePlanners, please contact Nancy Bogert at 800-561-0802 or nancy@planningcruises.com.  If you booked through a different agency, contact your T/A.

Questions or comments may be directed to Claudia Hale at cmughale@gmail.com or Skip Wilson at fiveacesskip@gmail.com

2021 GOODWILL AMBASSADOR / KATHIE DWYER

Click HERE for a list of all Unit 169 recipients.

It is with great honor we announce Kathie Dwyer as Unit 169 Goodwill Ambassador for 2021.   Kathie will be recognized by the ACBL at the Greenville tournament in June.  Kathie has been a member of our Unit since 1984, but her bridge career started in the ’70s in Michigan.

We all know Kathie has been a bridge director in Greensboro, directing two games a week for over 15 years.  In addition, she subs for other directors running their games when they need a much needed break.

But many of us know Kathie because of her willingness to mentor and teach us how to play bridge. I’m not sure of the exact number, but I believe that Kathie has helped over 50 of our new players grow their skills and become life masters.  Kathie has gone to regional and sectional tournaments to help new players win the much needed gold points.

For several years Kathie ran the Greensboro Sectional.  Now she is a regular volunteer at each event, always with a job and a willingness to help. If a member of our Unit was sick, Kathie would be the first to send an encouraging message.  Kathie's kindness, support and service to our Unit have been recognized.  Congratulations.

EMERALD LIFE MASTER / CATHY McLEOD

Congratulations to Cathy McLeod of Eden for reaching the masterpoint threshold of Emerald Life Master.  Emerald is the third highest level in ACBL's masterpoint rankings.  Through skill and experience, Cathy has earned 7,500+ masterpoints and joins only four others in Unit 169's active membership of 847 players to achieve this status, or higher,
