In Case You Missed It

Congratulations to Bob Hale,
Player of the Year 2024

Claudia Peter_edited.jpg

Bob Hale is the winner of the Tim Stecker Player of the Year contest for 2024. To qualify one must play in at least eight unit games. Master points from the unit games are combined with those from our sectional tournaments. Bob tallied over 78 MPs in nine unit games along with his sectional tournament results. Bob's regular partner at the unit games is his wife, Claudia.

Fran Tewkesbury is the runner up with 66 MPs. Eric Lee is second runner up with 60 MPs having attended fourteen unit games. See the final top ten players here.

Congratulations, Bob, Fran and Eric.

Peter J. Boyd-Bowman had one of his best national results at the recent NABC tournament in Las Vegas. He landed a fourth place finish in the Nail Life Master Pairs event and hauled in 55 platinum points. This was a four session event over two days with 132 tables. His partner was Jeff Roman from Oregon, a first time partnership for them. The overall winners were Jeff Meckstroth and David Berkowitz.

Congratulations, Peter.

The Bid More! Series with Peter J. Boyd-Bowman

Peter J. Boyd-Bowman introduces his Bid More! series of classes with three sessions on preemptive bidding.  Class size is limited. You will want to take advantage of this opportunity to learn from an expert.

Learning how to preempt well means learning how to be a tough opponent. In these classes, you will come to understand the importance of position and vulnerability as well as the value of being aggressive. These classes are designed for players with a little more time at the table (10-200 MPs or similar experience outside of a duplicate setting.

  • October 22: Weak Two Bids

What to know, when to break the rules, how to respond

  • November 12: Other Preemptive Bids

The gray area between the 3 and 5 levels. When to be aggressive opening vs overcalling and how to respond.

  • November 26: Handling the Opponents Preempts  Cancelled on Nov. 26. Watch for new date.

Learn how not to be pushed around by knowing what bids mean.

Each class is scheduled for 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Rd, Greensboro. The cost is only $30 each and will include handouts.

Space is limited to 12 students per class so reserve a spot early if you are interested.

Enroll early to learn competitive bidding techniques. When the opponents open the bidding, your side doesn't need to be delegated to the sidelines!! What are the possibilities? You may want to enter the auction trying to win the contract or interfere with the opponents from finding their best contract or make a bid helping your partner select the best suit to lead.

What FUN!

In Bridge Basics 2 you will learn the bidding guidelines for both partners when making overcalls, a takeout doubles and a preemptive bids. We will also discuss how competitive bidding affects the opening side.

Dates: Wednesdays December 11 & 18, January 8 & 15

Time: 9:45am to noon

Unit Holiday Party - Annual Meeting - STaC Game

Potluck Buffet Lunch
Kudos to Brenda Garzia for planning the hospitality.

Joanne Hawks and Sam Niehans check out the goodies. There was another table with dishes from all to complement the ham provided by the unit.

Tim Laverty brought cheer with blinking lights.

Annual Meeting

Bob Powell, Unit President, gave us the State of the Unit at a lightning pace. Lucky to get this shot.

Our financial situation is solid in spite of a nearly $5K loss on our October NLM tournament. Membership hovers around 750. Our Education Liaison, Judy Hellen, has brought in more teachers. Our website continues to be a source of communication.

Oh, yes. There was a game.

There were 17 tables in the open section and 4 more tables in the NLM section. Let me repeat: We had an NLM section! A shout out is due to Dian Carr who pushed for a place for newer players.

We had players from across the unit. It really is fun to see friends from outside our local club. Won't you join us at our next unit game on January 4th in Greensboro?

Here are some of our players before the game. See the results below.

A Young Bridge Player Contributes to Our Website

  • A note of thanks from Eric and Annie Pruitt

https://www.ccbaunit169.org/links has been an excellent resource for my grandson, Eric. He recently started to learn how to play bridge and developed quite the passion for it—he's always looking for information, resources and tips! I'm more than happy to encourage this newfound interest of his, especially since learning how to play together has such a wonderful bonding experience for us. Thank you so much for all your help!

Eric loves to share cool and useful finds, so he wanted to pass this along to you. It's https://www.aaastateofplay.com/playing-bridge-for-beginners/ and it's a great beginner's guide to playing bridge filled with tons of additional resources. It really helped us get started out, so he hoped it could do the same for others interested in learning how to play.

Longest Day.JPG
The Longest Day Culminates with
Silent Auction / Unit Alzheimer’s Charity Game

Saturday, June 29
Click HERE for pictures of event

Each year, Unit 169 has been a leading force in the nationwide fundraising effort (“The Longest Day”) to support continued research and new treatment options for Alzheimer’s Disease. In the weeks preceding our designated Unit Charity Game for Alzheimer’s Funding on June 29th, our individual clubs held special Charity Games to support Unit 169 efforts, where all ACBL fees collected went directly to The Alzheimer’s Fund. In addition, players across the Unit could bid in a silent auction to play with some top players, take in-home lessons with several teachers, or win numerous other generous gifts of time and talents. Fran Tewkesbury, our annual Longest Day Coordinator, zigzagged her way from one club game to another, promoting these gift-giving opportunities and providing bidding sheets on-site at local clubs.

At the culminating event on June 29th , 17 tables of players arrived at the Fellowship
Presbyterian Church in Greensboro to find the playing venue decorated in purple and white with banners, balloons and lots of great prizes to bid upon, along with an array of snacks, cookies and beverages. Unit Game Director Rich Peffer arranged two sections: an 11-table Open Game and a 6-table limited masterpoint game (0-750). Players were able to view the bidding sheets on Prizes in between rounds, and up the ante on items where they wanted to compete, giving the game an extra sense of flair and competition. Coordinator Fran T. allowed the bidding to continue briefly after the game, and then collected all entries to determine the winning bids. And the winner is…..????.....watch this space. Results for each item will be announced soon!

Masterpoint Winners in each Section of the Unit Alzheimer’s Game on June 29th included the following pairs:

In the Open Game, Kay and Randy Joyce from Durham, NC prevailed in the N/S direction with a 61% game, winning 5.53 Masterpoints (MPs). They were followed by the emerging powerhouse of Brenda Garzia – Phil Fultz (56%, 1.95 MPs) and Becky Vassar – Louise Garcia (55%, 1.31 MPs). In the E/W direction, there was a tie for 1 st place between Fran Tewkesbury – Martin Causley and Jim Bean – Rhett Inabet with identical 57% games (3.63 MPs). They were followed closely by Eric Lee – Tom May (56.94%, 2.33 MPs) and Bruce Southard – David Idleman (54%, 0.87 MPs). The game was an 11-table Mitchell movement, and everyone played a total of 27 boards.

In the 0-750 Game, top spot went to Sheila and Mark Bertoldi with a 59% (1.53 MPs), followed by Elizabeth Gatewood – Libby Noah with a 55% (1.16 MPs) and Vicki Williams – Margaret Smith with a 54% (0.86 MPs). The game was a 6-table Howell movement, and everyone played a total of 24 boards.

Full results and all MP winners can be found in Live for Clubs: https://my.acbl.org/club-
results/275628

All Unit Games for the rest of 2024 will feature two sections: an Open Game and 0-750 Game. Let’s keep this momentum and vigorous competition thriving; please mark your calendars and arrange your partner(s).

Next Unit Game coming up: Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, a Unit Championship Game.

**Unit Game in Salisbury on April 6th: Both 0-500 and Open Games, and Awesome Food!**

The Unit Game on April 6, 2024 was the first ever in Salisbury NC, and the Salisbury Bridge Club played host to a first-rate event at the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center. Louisa Witten, Tom Johnson and Dick Brisbin helped to organize the club members into a cohesive unit that helped advertise the game, brought a wide array of food items and made sure the venue was ready to go. The food provided by club members was wonderful in quality and variety, and included savory, fresh and sweet items along with a nice selection of coffee and beverages. A good turnout of players from around the Unit included several tables of players from Concord, NC and one adventurous couple who traveled from the Durham NC area to join us. The Unit Championship Game was Directed by Rich Peffer and included both a 0-500 Section and an Open Section. A total of 9.0 tables participated in this game.

The top 3 finishers in each Section were:
0-500 Game:
Anita Griffin - Kathryn Morris: 55%
Margaret Dorton - Louise Dorton-Shue: 54%
Anita Graham - Rebecca Creekmore: 52%

Open Game:
Ruth Derrow - Jeanne Torello: 61%
Bill Wisdom - Dan Fowler: 58%
Joanne McClusky - Nancy Osborne: 53%

Bridge Bulletin Bidding Box Logo.jpg

UNIT 169'S PETER J. BOYD-BOWMAN
FEATURED IN "THE BIDDING BOX" ARTICLE
BRIDGE BULLETIN - March 2024, Pages 38-41

The Bridge Bulletin auctions are meant to portray possible bidding sequences to one of the top-scoring contracts using common methods.

"We have four talented players this month, representing different areas of the country, competing with an exceptionally difficult set of hands to bid.

The first pair is Alex Hudson of Morrisville NC and Peter Boyd-Bowman of Greensboro NC....Hudson and Boyd-Bowman are young and talented professional bridge players who can often be seen at various tournaments.  Their bidding system is 2/1 forcing to game, but they have some uncommon and advanced agreements, as will be seen.

The competition is stiff, as their counterparts are Tracey Bauer of San Rafael CA and Richard Reitman of Los Gatos CA.....Reitman is a national champion, winning the Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams title in 2016.  Their bidding system is a more simple and familiar version of 2/1...."

New Format thru March – April

Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Road, Greensboro

With the Mentor-Mentee season perking along in our area, and lots of novice players learning the game and gaining experience at duplicate bridge, I am restructuring the offerings at Piedmont Bridge Club’s game on Thursday evenings (6:30 pm – 9:30 pm) at the Fellowship Church in Greensboro.  From now through the end of April, we will not be holding a separate Supervised Play in the Library, and the Open Game in the Fellowship Hall will be tailored as a great place for newer players to partner with experienced players or play against experienced players:

  • Now through April 24th:  P.B.C. will hold an Open Game where at least 15-18 hands are played in a 3-hour time span

  • Open Pairs pay the full price ($10 per player)

  • Mentor-Mentee pairs, either pre-arranged or arranged based on drop-in players, pay HALF PRICE ($5 per player).  Yes, you can come with your designated M-M partner, contact me to arrange a partner, or “just drop in”.

  • Novice pairs are also welcome = two players with <20 masterpoints, and will PLAY FOR FREE ($0 per player).

Questions?  Need a partner of a certain point level?  Please contact me a day or two ahead via email, text or (3rd choice) phone call.  If you are willing to be a designated partner for someone, that would be great – just let me know.  Last-minute drop-in players are also welcome, and will be paired up based on who else shows up that evening.  Please arrive a bit early so I can best help pair people.

Hope to see you there,

MENTOR-MENTEE PROGRAM HAS BEGUN!

Our Unit 169 Mentor-Mentee Program has begun.  If you would like to sign up to Mentor a beginning bridge player, then please let Anne McKiernan or Martha Meyer know via email or a phone call.  Their contact information is below after the program’s guidelines.

A Mentor can be anyone who would like to help a newer player learn more about the game. Preferably, a player who has been playing bridge for a few years and who has about 300 or more masterpoints. When a Mentor teaches, he or she also learns.

A Mentee can be any player who is not yet a Life Master and who has 500 or fewer masterpoints. You may request a specific Mentor if there is someone with whom you wish to play or with whom you already have a relationship.

Mentors and Mentees may schedule to play together any time.  It may be in one of our Club games where you can play together then go over the hand records face to face.  It may be in your home or elsewhere to give a lesson or talk conventions, bidding, defense, or hand play. It may be online in a game or a practice session. It may be in a tournament in pairs or team games. It is up to the two players to schedule games together.  In the past, some Mentees have covered the game fees for the Mentors since they are getting this one on one lesson.  That is all by choice, not a requirement.

The Unit currently has one set game just for Mentors and Mentees.

It is on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 pm at Fellowship Presbyterian Church.

Note:  That is the Saturday after the Gatlinburg Regional Tournament.

We are working on other dates and times just for Mentors and Mentees to be partners.  More information will be sent once we have some other games set.  Our goal is to provide a good learning environment for those who wish to learn more about bridge and to provide a chance for experienced players to give back to those learning.

Our mission is to provide challenging and fun bridge tournament experiences for Central Carolina Bridge Association members.

Our focus is to successfully execute four quality bridge tournaments each year.  This entails using great venues with easy access and parking, clean facilities, providing appropriate snacks and beverages, and using qualify ACBL directors.  In order to achieve this goal, we need additional financial support.

We are asking our friends who love this game to help.  The cost of hosting a quality tournament has increased and, as we build back our attendance at our tournaments, entry fees do not completely cover our cost.  Therefore, we are seeking a yearly contribution from those who can and are willing to help Unit 169.

We will not be passing envelopes at club games asking for contributions. By securing appropriate funding up front, we can plan and budget appropriately for each tournament.  There will be recognition and appreciation events for those who join.

We hope you will support us.  We appreciate checks in the amount of your choosing, made payable to:
